Even though I'm only giving this book a 3/5, and not a 5, I highly recommend it.
It was written in such a unique prose; I was beguiled by the way it was written. I've honestly never encountered another book like it. It was beautiful, but at times a bit too much too swallow.
Perhaps the scariest part was how easy it was to picture myself as a 12-year-old girl in Lolita's shoes. At 12, most girls are at their most naive. I think we all remember having some serious crushes on movie stars and would daydream about how we wanted to be with them and would 1000% let them have us, even if they were two or three times our age. In Lolita's case, she had a crush on a movie star that looked exactly like Humbert Humbert. Add to that her lack of love from her jealous mother and you can see how easy it was for her 12-year-old self to fall for it and be trapped in his web.
This has been such a controversial book for decades, for obvious reasons, but I'm glad that I read it, even if the librarian did totally judge me for checking it out.
Whatever, whatever, I'll read what I want.
