STARDUST BY NEIL GAIMANYou know, Neil Gaiman's books have always been hit or miss for me. I either really love them or really don't like them. This one was odd because it was right in the middle. There were parts that I thought were really cool, but overall, I'm left just feeling sort of lukewarm about everything. I ended up giving it a 3/5 Stars rating. There were a few characters that I really liked, mainly Charmed but most of them just felt tropey and done before. Also, something that irked me was that I noticed a few things in this book that were recycled into The Ocean At The End of The Lane, one of my all time favorite books, and so that made them feel cheapened and less magical for me, which is sad. I read it and devoured it all in one day. I just couldn't put it down. Simon's voice was a very unique one, one that isn't that common in YA contemporaries and I appreciated the diversity in this book. The whole time I was so invested in the mystery of who the heck is Blue!? I loved Simon so much I just wanted him to be happy. |

Here's the thing: I liked this book. I really did. I just had some problems with it. I really related to the main character of Molly. I thought just like her when I was 17. Her internal dialogue was spot on with my thoughts at her age. She's young. She's insecure. She's obsessed with finding a boyfriend. Pretty typical. Here's the problem: the book basically proves that you cannot possibly be happy until you have a boyfriend or a girlfriend. All throughout the book she was miserable and anxious (and I don't blame her; being a teen is hard) but then at the ending, everything just falls |
Overall rating: 3/5 Stars.
