I'm kinda torn. There are parts of this book that I really liked. I just feel like the whole thing could have been so much MORE.
What I Liked:
1. The Atmospheric Writing - This book felt equal parts like a contemporary, a magical realism and a murder mystery book. The descriptions about the town were particularly compelling. I definitely preferred the parts of the book with the more magical realism feel to it. The more contemporary parts were kind of what cheapened the whole thing overall for me.
2. Annabella the Bird - I thought that this mythical little bird was a super creative and beautiful touch to the story. It gave the story some history and made it feel more real to me.
3. Diversity - The main character is a lesbian. I don't find a lot of lesbians in literature.
What I Didn't Like:
1. Harrison - First of all, he was irritating to me. Secondly, he didn't really serve a purpose in this book at all, other than being a red herring.
2. Pointless Romance - I don't really feel like having a tiny little romance in this story was actually necessary. It didn't really add anything to the story other than a little diversity. The romance kinda went nowhere and felt like a waste of time by the end.
3. The Bad "Man-Hating" Kind of Feminism - Don't get me wrong. Feminism is GOOD. However, you know the feminists that hate men just for being men? Yeah, these chicks were those kind. They said multiple times that "of course the killer was a man; men are always killing things." They kept saying "Evil Man" and at one point, the girl said she wished she had "dick-chopping off powers." lol Ease up a little ladies, it's not they're fault they're not women too.
I'm not sure how I feel about that ending.
I like the addition of the magic powers a lot.
Overall, a quick and interesting read. If you're like me and LOVE witches, maybe give this book a chance.
