Tag, you're it! Let's all do the Thanksgiving Book Tag (and then eat some pie.)
For this one, I'm going to have to go with #famous by Jilly Gagnon. I read it this year and finished the book, only to immediately yell out: IS THAT IT?! Not enough happened, aside from the main character repeatedly telling us how insecure she is and, in the end, it all pretty much amounted to nothing. An actual waste of time, this one was for me.
That would definitely have to be The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte. I decided to read a book by each of the Bronte sisters this year. I really really loved Wuthering Heights and adored Jane Eyre but not this one at all. It was one of the most boring books I've ever read for sure. I couldn't even make it all the way through. I can see now why the other Bronte sisters books are more popular. And here I was feeling sorry for her. Not anymore.
The Amber Spyglass, which is the third and final book in the His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman, absolutely shattered my soul. I really loved the first two books as well, but it wasn't until the last book that I had my heart ripped out of my chest, crushed to pieces and then taped back together with little pieces of tape that say: "Will and Lyra 4 Life" all over. They may only have been 12 years old, but Will and Lyra may just be my OTP, if it weren't for Ginny and Harry.
The first book that came to my mind was Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas. The whole serious is pretty kick ass. The coolest action scene, though, may just be found in The Assassin's Blade, the prequel book of novellas. More specifically, the novella The Assassin and the Pirate Lord. There were some action sequences that just stuck in my mind as pretty epic. Like one part, where she's sword fighting and she moves out of the way just in time, but they nick the end of her braid and her hair comes flowing down all dramatically. Wicked cool.
I'm super sorry to say that I didn't like Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi. I had my eye on this series for years and finally decided to pick it up this year. I liked it at first. I really like Mafi's unique writing style, but as the story went on, I found less and less reasons to enjoy it. Basically, as soon as Warren was introduced, I was ready to find the nearest exit. It was not for me. Look how beautiful that cover is though. Gorgeous!
The Selection Series by Kiera Cass. Maxon is so freaking sweet to America. Team Maxon all the way. Just go away Aspen. You don't even compare. I think that this series is so much fun. It's like The Hunger Games had a baby with The Bachelor and it is unexpectedly amazing. Loved the idea behind the book. Loved how quick and easy and fluffy it was. Loved how sickeningly sweet Maxon was. The last two books The Heir and The Crown don't even count. Stop at #3.
I'm going to have to say it: Twilight is pretty corny. That being said, I love corn! I recently reread the series and I still love it to this day. Sorry, not sorry. Twilight is my adolescence and it will always be a part of my heart. I can definitely see a few flaws that I didn't see when I was 12, but I think it gets way more crap than it deserves. I have read way worse books that are well loved by many. Cut this book some slack. It's practically the grandmother of the YA genre that so many of us love so much today. Have some respect. lol
I thought that Strange The Dreamer by Laini Taylor was a beautiful book. I gave it 5 stars. That being said, it's only been 6 months since I've read it and I only remember about 5% of what happened. It was a pretty big book: over 500 pages! It was beautifully and lyrically and magically written, but there was so much description, if half of that were taken out, to get to the meat and bones of the story, you'd probably only need 300 pages tops. I'm not sure if it would be as good but it would probably be easier to remember.
Shout out to The Princess Diaries series by Meg Cabot for being such quick, cute and fun reads! I read this series very early in 2017, flew through them and I still laugh sometimes thinking about how much fun they were. I never suspected when starting the first book, that I would love the characters SO MUCH that I'd be 11 books in and still want more! I'm not sure I'd ever get tired of Mia and her crazy antics. I think this would be a perfect series to read to get out of a slump.
That's it! Now get out there and do the turkey twerky to burn off all those calories. lol
